Exploring Nature
A Bug’s Life
It’s usually hit or miss when it comes to educational crafts. Sometimes after a good craft run with the kids, I become too ambitious and overestimate their skill and interest levels. Such is the case with my “bug craft”.
Using the leftover stems and leaves from my wreath project, I made a bush, which the kids were really excited about when they assumed they would be able to find some real bugs among all the plastic greenness. I had printed out some bug sheets for the kids to examine, color, cut out, and then “hide” among the leaves. We were good up until the hiding. I think they thought it was lame that there were no real bugs. Oh well. At least it was neat to see that Calvin is getting better at coloring. He was really adamant about copying my colored bugs.
Learning About Colors
In effort to start teaching the kids about colors and what happens to them when you mix two together, we attempted the “milky rainbow” experiment. The kids had a lot of fun helping me mix (I used white tempera paint instead of milk). But I don’t think they quite got the color mixing concept. We’ll have to work on that
If you’re interested in doing this activity with your kid(s), you can download a copy of my color chart here.
